LASIK Risks

LASIK Risks

Shelley Walcott

Two million people have changed their lives with LASIK surgery. Most people who have LASIK are pleased with the results, but we met one Milwaukee man who says he was better off before.

Robert Scott is far-sighted, and has worn glasses since second grade. He says he was sick of his 4 eyes, and LASIK seemed like the answer. "More or less to not have glasses no more, and to see clearer," he explains.

Robert had LASIK surgery at Optivision in October. He says the right eye went perfectly, but there was a problem with the left. "One eye turned out pretty well 20/20, and the other eye is still so over-corrected," he says.

So now, instead of one pair of glasses...he's got a dozen! He has to switch them for different tasks...like reading, watching TV, and driving. What went wrong? A machine suctioning Richard's left eye didn't quite do the job.

Optivision surgeon Gerald Clarke says that's not completely unheard of. In fact, it's one of the risks patients are warned about.

"The shape of the eye, or the shape of the patient's orbit, the bones around the eye, can cause the suction to be inadequate," Dr. Clarke explains.

Doctor Clarke couldn't comment on Robert's case, but says many patients do need to go back for another procedure.

"5-10% are much improved, but need to have an enhancing procedure," Dr. Clarke says.

And, like any surgery, there are risks patients need to be aware of.

"There's no procedure that's 100% safe, and anyone who labels LASIK as 100% safe is giving the wrong information," Dr. Clarke warns.

Robert is scheduled for his second surgery Wednesday. He hopes this time he can get rid of his glasses-- for good. But he wouldn't recommend LASIK to anyone else.

"If I had to go back in time...I would never have this done again," Robert admits.

According to trade journals, serious complications from LASIK are well below 1%.

Do your research before you have LASIK surgery, and don't just look for the cheapest deal. The average cost of LASIK is about $1500 an eye.
