Tech TipsScott Steele's Tech Tips: Restoring Old Hard DrivesBy Katie DeLong
It can get frustrating if you're trying to find a way to transfer files to a new PC or have some old hard drives that you're not sure what to do with.
Have no fear: TODAY’S TMJ4’s Technology Specialist Scott Steele has just the thing for you.
Most people who've owned a computer at some point in their life have already upgraded to a newer faster version, some more than one.
Each time, the biggest hassle many mention is migrating all their files, documents and photos to the new computer.
A lot of hobbyists actually salvage the old hard drives as spares.
This is one of the least expensive, most innovative ideas Scott Steele has come across in a long time. It's called a USB universal drive adapter made by Newertech. The company's marketing team calls it the Swiss Army Knife of disk connectivity, and actually, that's an accurate description.
Instead of throwing out any of these old drives, imagine being able to see and use them on your new home computer or even your portable notebook PC.
It's as easy as connecting the old drive to the appropriate slot, then plugging the adapter into your newer computer's USB port.
Professional PC consultants had cornered the market on products like this for years.
"Yeah it wasn't something easy to come by for the average consumer, it was available, you know, as a tool in the IT industry,” Biskotech’s Jeff Biskowitz said.
Biskowitz thinks making a tool like this available to the average computer user opens up a world of possibilities.
“Sure I think this is a very easy way to put your old hard drive to use. In fact, it's not even limited to hard drives. You can hook this up to CD’s, floppy disk drives. These days a lot of new computers don't even come with a floppy disk anymore, but with something like this, you can take your old floppy drive, just connect it right up and still be able to read your old floppy disks that you might have lying around that you might need to get at,” Biskowitz said.
Scott Steele: “So it lets you recycle a lot of your old stuff that you might not have been able to use."
“Absolutely,” Biskowitz said.
Using the $30 product is incredibly intuitive. Its indicator lights tell you exactly what's going on and for anyone looking to give new life to old drives, this is the ultimate simple solution.
You'll find the Newertech universal drive adapter at many computer stores, or online.
