A Unique Baseball Experience

Door County League plays on Washington Island

  • Print

Baseball is played all over Wisconsin this time of year, not just at Miller Park.

The Kolberg Braves are headed to a road game. There's just one catch... They have to cross water to get there.

This is door county baseball, the tip of the peninsula. The ferry to Washington Island.

"Oh i would say it's very unique," says Kolberg coach and pitcher Dave Neinas. "I don't know how many other leagues have to take a boat to get to a ball game."

"It's an island tradition," says ferry captain Eric Foss. "The fans, the local people look forward to it every Sunday."

The trip takes 30 minutes. Once on land, directions are easy... Go to the first stop sign and take a left.

Islanders start arriving for the weekly event. Some players grew up here where the population is 650.

"You gotta be either good at reading or just enjoy the quiet life, says Matt Foss, who grew up on the island.

The Islanders pitcher is 55 years old.

"My arms feels good yet so i can't complain," says Mark Woerfel. "This is the way baseball should be played, a true americana story."

This is one of the true county leagues still around, and it is one of the only ones using aluminum bats.

There are good plays...foul balls... and the 7th inning stretch.

In the end it's a Kolberg victory. Then it's back to the ferry. One of the most unusual and beautiful baseball experiences in all of Wisconsin.
