Watch your favorite movies--- on the road.

New technology allows you to download your favorite shows... and even copy your movies. The big question: if you use it, are you breaking the law?

Nathan Gartz spends a lot of time away from his Shorewood home-- with only his iPod for company. Fortunately, he has learned how to put his favorite movies on it.

"It definitely helps as far as entertainment goes," Gartz told us.

But getting those movies on a digital device is tricky. PC Magazine's Lance Ulanoff explains why.

"There's a digital lock that makes it impossible to copy the data off of a disk," he showed us.

Until now. New software programs unscramble DVD's, so you can copy them.

Nathan Gartz is an old hand at using the software. He showed us how quickly he can unlock the content on a DVD, and transfer it to his iPod.

"For the user that's just starting out or for the technical guru that knows everything about computers, it's easy for everyone to use," he explained.

Lance Ulanoff agreed. "We have tried these things out to understand how they work and some of them work surprisingly well."

But is it legal? You are allowed to copy something you buy for yourself. But a different law makes illegal to break the digital codes on DVD's. So which law applies?

"We're all working on a little bit of thin ice here," Ulanoff admitted.

Fred von Lohmann, with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, says the law doesn't make sense. "There is a sense here which it prevents consumers from doing things they otherwise would be entitled to do legally."

Congress is now considering the issue-- it's a matter of laws keeping up with technology.
In the meantime, Nathan plans to keep taking his movies "to go."

"Why would I want to go and buy another copy of for my iPod whereas I already have it in my collection? It saves me money," he explained.

No one's been busted for copying movies... But experts say the movie industry could crack down, just like the music folks did for illegal downloads. And remember-- it IS illegal to copy DVD's to sell or give to other people.
