Vocation Vacation

Vocation Vacation

Heather Shannon

Are you bored at work? Think there's something better out there for you? It may be time to take a Vocation Vacation.

Jeremy Monson is a metal artist from Sacramento who wanted to take his metal-working skills to a whole new level. "You can see how swords are made on TV sometimes, but to actually get in there, get your hands dirty."

Jeremy traveled to New Glarus to work at Albion Swords. The two-day vacation offers one-on-one mentoring. But it's not just a learning experience for Jeremy. It's also beneficial to master swordmakers like Joel Donahue. He explains, "It almost focuses you to do a better job at your own work to have to explain it in 2 days to someone else."

Transforming a piece of metal into a fully functional sword takes a lot of work. Jeremy's favorite part is grinding. That's the process of sharpening the piece of metal.

From swords to knives...our next Vocation Vacation takes two doctors to Sarah Levy's kitchen! Sarah is a chocolatier and pastry chef in Chicago. Dr. Roopal Thakkar and his wife Mavi spend two days away from patients...making sweet treats.

"It certainly is very hard work, but a pleasant departure from what your day-to-day, typical work life would be," Roopal admits.

Mavi bought the vacation for Roopal as a gift. "He's always shown an interest in making chocolates and pastries, and made a mess outta my kitchen at home, so I thought this would be a really good present for him."

Roopal's says his favorite part is working with the chocolate. "Cuz then, you know, you get to lick the spoon when you're done," he exclaims.

Sarah loves the enthusiasm of the vocationers. "They're like 'God this is so fun, I can't believe you guys get to do it', and it kinda makes you appreciate too, things we start to take for granted, because we do this everyday."

Every vocationer gets something different out of the experience.

Roopal says it's a chance to get away.

"To see what else is out there and available to you," Roopal says.

Or a chance to expand your career like Jeremy.

"I'd like to build a metal-type shop, that I can do my own metal sculpture," Jeremy says.

But Vocation vacations aren't cheap. They range from hundreds of dollars, to more than a thousand bucks, depending on how long they last.

There are more than a hundred different Vocation Vacations to choose from, all over the United States. You can even be a weathercaster for a couple of days!
