Special Assignment4 Your Health: Hyp YogaBy Shelley WalcottWAUWATOSA - A new workout offers the chance to trim your stress, and your waistline. It's called Hyp Yoga--'hyp' meaning hypnosis. Nine months ago, yoga instructor Haley Stozek introduced Hyp Yoga at her Haleybird Studios in Wauwatosa. "It's not scary, it's very relaxing and it's 100% self choice," she explains. It's the only class she knows of its kind in Wisconsin. At first glance, it looks like a typical yoga class--a combination of mantra and postures. Then Stozek guides her class into a hypnosis through a series of self-empowering statements. "You can handle anything life throws at you, if you just remember to relax and find deep easy breaths," she tells he class. Stozek says the goal is to bring the mind to a heightened state of awareness--in order to achieve lifestyle and weight loss goals. "We're really using our full brain to help us overcome a bad habit or to learn a new behavior in our life," Stozek explains. Some students like busy mom Pam Foti says they feel relaxed. "I feel really good, I feel relaxed, I feel confident, I feel like I've done something really good for myself and kind of given me a healthy perspective back," Foti says. Deb Ruesch hopes the class helps her maintain a healthy weight. She says, "The hypnosis part just reminds me of the truth about myself, that I am strong, that I am empowered, that I can do things that I think sometimes I can't because I am overwhelmed." Stozek says all Hyp Yoga classes are about training your mind to be able to handle any of life's obstacles. "Everybody needs to have a way to hit the reset button in their life," she says matter-of-factly. People shouldn't worry about giving up control during hypnosis. Stozek says you have the ability to get up and walk away at any time. |
