Special AssignmentNo More BulliesBy Courtny GerrishA Washington County teen is fighting back against bullies-- and she's turned it into an "art form." Fourteen-year old Lauren is used to being a role model for her younger sister and cousin. Now, she's a role model for girls all over the country. "I've been through a lot of situations with bullying," she told us. She turned that experience into something positive, a work of art. American Girl, a Middleton-based toy company which creates historic dolls with real-life stories, sponsored an anti-bullying contest. To enter, girls had to create an anti-bullying poster. Lauren's cousin asked her to enter, so she did. "I drew a picture of helping someone up and I did a quote from Aesop that says, 'No act of kindness no matter how small is ever wasted,'" she pointed out to us. Lauren based her poster on some of her own experiences. Those experience include cyber-bullying, a growing problem among teens. "They message you and send really mean messages if maybe you were dating the guy they liked," Lauren gave us an example. In her poster, she showed both sides of bullying. "It really showed me how bullying can affect people and the poster can show other people not to bully." That's a big deal, says anti-bullying expert Lisa Strauss. "It's a problem in schools all over the country." The Waukesha County teacher helped develop a new anti-bullying program being sent to schools all over the state. "We teach them that they can either be part of the problem or part of the solution. There really isn't an in between when you are a bystander," Strauss said. Lauren's not a bystander. She's a winner... American Girl picked her poster as one of just 15 winners out of 20,000 entries. Her mom, Lisa, couldn't be prouder. "I think she handles bullying herself very well and seeing other people bullied, I think she's a very good role model that way." Lauren hopes her poster gets the message across. "If you see others getting picked on them help them and be their friend." Lauren won a doll, $200 for her school to use on anti-bullying materials, and her poster is on the American Girl Web site.
