4 On Your Side: Tech Steals and Splurges

By Vince Vitrano

There are a ton of new technical gadgets that seem to do almost everything. We checked them out to find the best deals.

Robert Walker-Bunda scans the Internet regularly, looking for technical perfection. "Two flat screen televisions, a DVD player, DVR cable; we've got our MAC, we've got our MACBOOK, we've got our Epson 1280 Printer, I have got my iPhone, my wife has her iPhone," he lists.

Sometimes he splurges-sometimes he's looking for a bargain. So we worked with 'cnet.com' to check out big splurges, and great deals.

Looking for a laptop? The DELL I-1545 was named cnet's steal. For about $450, you get good performance, battery life, and wide screen display.

But if you're looking to splurge--cnet's Dan Ackerman has another suggestion. "You got the Sony's VAIO FW480J. It's about $1,200, looks a lot nicer, really nice keyboard and touchpad, just really slick looking and has the blue ray drive," he says.

For printers... the Canon Pixma Inkjet will run you about $50. You could also spend a lot more for the Lexmark X7675 PRO--A mega printer with a ton of functions.

"That's got a lot more bells and whistles. It's got this little flip out control center with a little screen you can see what's going on, enter all kinds of commands and it's a Wi-Fi printer. Anybody in the house can use this printer," Ackerman explains.

In the gaming arena, the PS-3 is still about $400, or go cheap with the Nintendo DSI for under $200.

"I really want a Nintendo Wii, which my wife has forbade," Robert complains.

For talking and texting--the Samsung Trance has a slide-up keyboard and costs about $40.

With the holidays coming, you'll probably be able to find some great door buster deals on electronics. So you can splurge...on a budget.
