Bo Black's Farewell 11/9/06
Carole Meekins
For years, she was a Milwaukee icon. The queen of the fest. The picture of fun.
Now, Bo Black is counting her last days. She invited Carole Meekins to her Arizona home, to say goodbye to the people and city who meant so much to her.
An appearance by former Summerfest executive director Bo Black was a sure sign it was summer in Milwaukee.
The former UW Homecoming queen, cheerleader and beauty pageant queen spent her life in the spotlight. She even adorned the cover of Playboy. Today, she is in the fight for her life.
"He said my aorta is the size of a 600 pound person. It's totally calcified," she explains. When I go upstairs, I can't breathe."
Carole interviewed Black back in 2001 after she had surgery for her first aneurysm. Carole was the first person she ever with talked about it.
Now, the news is worse.
"I have five more aortic aneurysms. I have a descending that's five centimeters, and that's big, two in my abdominal, and two in my kidneys. I have two leaking valves," Bo explains. "I probably won't ever be back to Milwaukee."
Black admits that while she loves the scenic beauty of Arizona. She misses a lot about Wisconsin..like the Packers, Lake Michigan..and the honesty of the Wisconsin people. "The people were so sweet..I think that's why I've made it!"
Bo's husband, former Brewers manager Tom Trebelhorn says his wife is putting up a courageous fight. "I look at it this way...She went from turbo to slow Bo because of this," he says sadly.
Before marrying Trebelhorn-- Bo was a single mom of three. Daughter Stephanie is a Northwestern graduate and mother of Bo's three grandchildren.
Kelly graduated with honors in theatre from ASU. She's a model and actress.
And son Blake graduated number one in his class at Arizona State School of Business and will graduate from law school this year. He has only good things to say about his mother. "She was excellent..she was a good role model...She exuded a lot of good discipline lot of good values in us as we were growing up."
What's really painful to Bo is not having the energy to fly and see her daughters and grandkids. "People are like, 'How can someone spend sixteen hours a day in bed?' Well if your not well..yeah," she says.
And Black warns women to take action if your blood pressure and cholesterol is even a little high.
"Just because you look healthy and look fit, don't assume everything is OK," she advises.
Now, Milwaukee's own queen with a beautiful smile, big heart and winning personality needs our prayers.
Doctors cannot operate on her aneurysms because they are a millimeter away from her spine and she could risk paralysis.
