Special Assignment4 On Your Side: Cheap VacationBy Courtny GerrishDE PERE - During the Summer, some dorms on the St. Norbert College campus are transformed into vacation homes. Wayne and Judy Adler live in Georgia year-round, but come 'back to school' for the Summer. "It's just so great. It's economical, you don't have to purchase any property or anything," Wayne explains. The Adler's are part of the Snowbirds Program at St. Norbert College in De Pere. Most Snowbirds are retirees living in warmer climates, who return home for the summer. Roxy Michiels is one of the leaders of the program. She says, "They develop a little community on their own, meeting each other, and keep those relationships going throughout the whole year." For the Adler's, vacationing at St. Norbert gives them the college experience they never had. "They treat us just like students, and we have access to everything that goes on, and it's just exciting, fast-paced, it's very nice," Wayne beams. From watching some lively music on the Fox River, to working up a good sweat in the student gym, to taking a quiet moment for prayer, to enjoying a stroll in downtown De Pere....vacationers at St. Norbert have free reign to explore everything the college has to offer. Bill Gilbert is from Menomonee Falls. He's in town for a wedding, and is staying at the college's on-campus hotel, The Kress Inn. He says he'd come back for a vacation. "Very affordable, great chance to get out of the city, see something a little bit different... There's a lot of arts and literature, and I think there's a lot to see, a lot to do. There's always museums, and the history of the campus," he says. So before you book that exotic and expensive trip, consider the option of going back to school! Some visitors to St. Norbert even take classes during the summer. |
