Iron Cupcake

By Courtny Gerrish

MILWAUKEE - The smash hit show 'Iron Chef' brought competitive cooking to the forefront. Now there's a new twist on the contest...that has local bakers getting very creative in the kitchen. Fratello's on the Water in downtown Milwaukee is known for fine dining, but on select Mondays, it's 'Iron Cupcake' time! Sandy Ploy co-founded the group last April. "It's like Iron Chef. There's either an ingredient or a theme," she explains. The theme on the night we attended was 'Breakfast'. Cupcake flavors included french toast, mimosa, and bloody mary. Wait a second: A bloody mary cupcake?!? "The bloody mary cupcake, which is mine, is not sweet at all...totally savory. But definitely umm....out there," Sandy laughs. It's Katie Kregel's first cupcake competition. She admits, "I'm a little nervous. It's a lot of pressure." She hopes her mimosa cupcakes are a winner. But the event means more than that to her. "I think it's always good when Milwaukee is coming up with new things that people can come out and do, especially when it brings together different people from different walks of life and age groups," Katie says. It's not only the ladies doing the baking. Josh Secaur is a regular at the contests. He decided to play with the idea of sweet and salty. "I made a french toast cupcake with maple butter-cream frosting in a bacon cup," Josh explains. Unlike some contestants, he has a pretty laid back attitude. "I lose every time anyway, so it's cool. I just come to hang out pretty much," he admits. Jeff Reinke is a the Sous Chef at Fratello's, and the contest co-founder. He says the key to winning is originality. "I think the original idea has a lot to do with it. If you can do something and people are like, 'Oh my God, I didn't even think of that!'" Anyone inside the restaurant can be a judge. Reactions are sometimes mixed, but it doesn't seem like anyone minds doing the job! "I just wanted to come and see what all the buzz is about, and see just a different take on a cooking competition," judge Cassie Poulter says. Brookfield's Susie Ewing took home first place for her cupcake creation, 'Breakfast in Bed'. She wins a Fratello's gift card, and the highly coveted 'bragging rights'. "I feel good, I feel good. This is my second win. So um, it's really a lot of fun," she exclaims. 'Iron Cupcake' started right here in Milwaukee, and now several cities across the nation are holding similar contests. The event is totally free. The next challenge is on Monday, February 9, and the special ingredient is tea.
