Speedbusters: Morning Drive

  • Print
MILWAUKEE - Focusing in on slowing people down, we took Speebuster regular Milwaukee Police officer Gregg Duran out early recently as people drove to work. “A lady on her phone doing 47,” yelled out Duran with his laser gun pointing at the speeding car. When he pulled the woman over she wondered if she was the guilty party. “You sure that was me,” she asked. Duran caught her and other drivers recently during the morning rush around from 7am to 9am. “She has to drop the kids off before she goes to work; that's just way too fast,” he said. The most common excuse, "I'm late for work." "Did you see how fast you were going,” asked Duran. “I don't know how fast,” said the driver. “Are you ready? 50,” Duran said. That's 50 in a 30 mile an hour zone on Milwaukee's north side. "That's just crazy fast,” Duran said. Officers say speeding is a problem all the time, but it can be dangerous specifically in the morning and the numbers don't lie. According to the state of Wisconsin, more than 2400 speed related accidents happened between seven and nine in the morning back in 2007. The numbers go down drastically before and after those hours. “Maybe you hit the snooze button too many times and you're trying to make up for lost time,” Duran said. And because many of those accidents lead to injuries, police are trying to force drivers to get the message sooner rather than later.
