Winter Weather Preview

By John Malan

MILWAUKEE - This is Winter Weather Awareness Week. After last year's winter, many people are already bracing for another rough ride! Snow plows were a common sound last winter. It seems the snow just kept falling...and blowing...and covering everything in sight. Justin Lothrop says, "I moved here January of last year, just in time for the big snow. I was really thrilled." He adds sarcastically, "Looking forward to another one this year. Yes!" He has his own non-scientific prediction about this winter: "We're in Wisconsin, and winter is going to suck because that is how it is in Wisconsin." But what are the experts saying? Rusty Kapela is with the National Weather Service in Sullivan. "We did take a look at Milwaukee's snowfall records going back to the 1880's, and I could not find any two consecutive winters with snowfall around 100 inches...If I were a betting man I'd say, 'No, we're not gonna have a repeat of last winter,'" Kapela says. How about the temperature? Last year we were slightly below normal. This winter looks a little more promising. The official outlook calls for above-normal temperatures. Wendi Pagac is relieved. She says she'll take the snow over the cold any day! "I can deal with the snow if it's sunny, and then I don't have the cold air blowing in my face," she explains. But the Farmer's Almanac says otherwise. It calls for another tough winter here in Milwaukee. So what is other folklore predicting? One proverb states, "A long, hot summer equals a long, cold winter." Lucky for us, we never even hit 90 degrees this past summer! But our furry friend the woolly bear caterpillar isn't so sure. Tradition says the wider the red band in the middle, the warmer the air will be. So the final verdict: This winter probably won't be as bad as last year...but really...that isn't saying much! Wendi is trying to stay positive. "I hope it's not as bad as last year, but what are you gonna do? Just find a way to deal with it I guess," she says.
