MILWAUKEE - Imagine being able to say goodbye to a loved one who passes away...from thousands of miles away. It's now possible thanks to modern technology.
Thanks to live web-streaming, family members from across the nation are able to watch funerals at Krause Funeral Home on Capitol Drive in Milwaukee.
Ruthann Augustine arranged the funeral for her sister, Mary Grace. The only problem: she had several out-of-state relatives with conflicts.
"Because my sister-in-law in California had just gotten out of the hospital, my brother was not allowed to come to the funeral because he had to stay back in California and take care of her," Ruthann explains.
Krause Funeral Home is one of the only places in the area to offer this high-tech option. It was a blessing to Ruthann, who wanted to make sure her whole family could say a proper goodbye to her sister Mary Grace.
"It also allows for a long-distance closure of sorts, those people who can't physically attend," Ruthann points out.
Ruthann's husband Jim admits he was a little skeptical of the concept at first though.
"I would hate to see this take the place of actual participation in a funeral," he says.
Mark Krause introduced the idea to his colleagues about a year ago. Now, they're using it about three times a week.
"I think the future is just wide open when it comes to technology, and it's just...I guess the key for us is to embrace the things that happen, and how do we implement it to create more value and meaning for the funeral," Krause says.
All it really takes is a camera and a laptop, but even though it's relatively easy to set-up... it's not for everybody.
"You're trying to explain a concept, and that's often so difficult when people are going through grief," Krause warns.
Mark says one of the reasons the idea is catching on: funerals have evolved through the years.
"Kind of a subtle flip happened, and funerals are about the life, and they end up being celebrations," he says.
Ruthann and Jim couldn't agree more.
"It's a celebration of life. Not only that a death has taken place, but more importantly that a life has been lived," Jim said.
Not just anyone can log on to this very private event. Each funeral service is password protected, so only family members have access.
Right now Krause Funeral Home charges about $200 for the service. They hope to continue to improve upon the technology.
