Speedbusters: Woolworth Avenue

By Jay Olstad

MILWAUKEE - Take a drive on the 4700 block of West Woolworth Avenue and you may wonder where the problem is. Wait a few minutes…and the narrow passage-way near Mill Road and North 43rd Street speeds up on you! The stretch does not have a posted speed limit, so in the city of Milwaukee, that means it's a 30 mile an hour zone. Plus, unlike other roads we've profiled, it's longer and it's in an industrial area. That means if you drive the stretch, it can be very narrow because of the trucks parked on the side. It can also be very bumpy. Still, drivers speed outside Jim Wick's business...narrowly missing his trucks and the drivers. "At times, it's scary. You just want to take a step back because it's like, 'Whoa!'" Wick says. But it appears drivers just don't care as they by-pass stop lights on Mill Road for Woolworth Avenue. TODAY’S TMJ4’s Jay Olstad: "Slows down a bit, but was going 45." And it just gets faster... Olstad: "49...48" And faster. Olstad: "49" Wick is asking Speedbusters and the police for help. "I'd love to see them patrol here more often," Wick says. He adds, "It's very dangerous, I just don't think they realize." We passed along Jim's complaint to the Milwaukee Police Department.
