Fun Nun

By Susan Kim

From career to relationships, most twenty-somethings are trying to find their place in life. Katy La Fond found her place, and took an interesting path to get there. When you think of nuns, you probably think of church, prayer, and...improv? 28-year-old Katy La Fond officially joined the School Sisters of Saint Francis last August. She also performs at Comedy Sportz in downtown Milwaukee! "I'm giving a positive view of religious life. I'm breaking down some stereotypes," Katy says. She adds, "For one level it was kind of a witness thing like yes, I'm a nun, and yes, I can do this." Katy's stage name is the 'Fun Nun'. She's not afraid to poke a little fun at herself or the church. For example, one of her lines on stage was: "It's like I always told you. Church is like an aerobics class: Up down up down, take a little walk, up down." Katy doesn't only light up the comedy stage. Her fellow sisters, including Sr. Julia Rice, have noticed a change in their house. "She kind of represents the future, the future of religious life," Sr. Rice explains. Being a nun wasn't always in Katy's plans. She was even engaged a few years ago. "I really thrust myself into the wedding and being a wife, and I just thought, 'Hmm, this really doesn't fit me as a person,'" Katy recalls. Katy admits it's sometimes hard being a young woman in the Sisterhood. "My lifestyle choices are definitely different than most 28-year-olds. Religious life is a counter-cultural choice today," she says. But she stays balanced by going out with friends: Whether it be meeting for a drink, going to a Brewers game, or just hanging out. Lisa Moldenhauer is Katy's best friend, and fellow "player". She described Katy for us. "She's certainly one of a kind. When I tell people I have a friend who's a nun and she's my age, they're really surprised. But I can't imagine Katy doing anything else with her life." Katy is actually the youngest School Sister in the entire nation! She's also a school principal, and starts a new job at St. Roman's this fall. One of the ways Katy tries to engage young people is through her blog. It's called 'Religious Life Rocks!--The Adventures of One Fun Nun'.
