Speedbusters: Brookfield Road

  • Print
BROOKFIELD - What do you get when you have an elementary school, speeders, and the Speedbusters gun all in one spot? "The slower speeds sure would help," said one mom. Slower than normal maybe but we definitely still have a problem. "38," yelled TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Jay Olstad. The speed limit is 25 on any other day on Brookfield Road near the Brookfield Elementary School. But Speedbusters caught drivers going way over that during the 15 mile an hour school zone. Drivers were going more than 20 miles over and it has parents like Jacquie Vraney worried for her 9-year-old son Evan. "A lot of times I see kids walking or riding their bike and that makes me a little nervous because they're not as cautious as we might think we are," said Vraney. Speed is such a problem on this stretch that Brookfield Elementary School officials claim police show up before and after school just to make sure drivers slow down. "It's quite scary when you have kids playing out there and you have people coming over the hills here in Brookfield. It does get kind of fast," said parent Chad Phillips. And once the school zone ended, speeds got even faster. "36, 37, 38 miles per hour," said Olstad. That was nothing compared to the next car. "42," yelled Olstad. Remember--it's a 25 mile an hour zone right next to an elementary school. "This mini-van, its going 44," said Olstad. Parents haven't forgotten the speed limit and they're asking drivers not to either. "We need to watch out for that," said Phillips.
