Web Site For Kids

  • Print
Adults watch out: Kids are getting more and more web savvy! We found a Web site where kids rule. They slide down waterfalls, and help combat global warming. The Web site is kidscom.com...a virtual world based right here in Milwaukee! "This site, you can have a lot of fun and learn at the same time," says 11-year-old Katie Schleicher. Kids across the world can log on and live together in the 'Idea-Seeker Universe'. Jori Clarke is the founder. She explains, "We use the virtual world, virtual pets, and virtual friends to teach them how to make a difference in the real world." Each kid starts by creating their own character, or avatar. They can even design their own house! Chloe Collin has been on the site for about a year. "You get to do your own thing, and don't have parents telling you what to do," Chloe says. But it's not all fun and games. The premise of the site: The climate is being attacked, and kids have to save it. That message then carries over to the real world. "We're trying to be more energy efficient in the house and everywhere," Chloe explains. So what do parents think? Chloe's dad Christopher thinks it's great. "They're gonna be in front of a computer anyway, might as well be incorporated to a site like this," he says. And the kids aren't the only ones learning... "When you talk to your parents about this stuff it's like 'I didn't know you knew about that, and stuff like that,'" Chloe says. So don't be afraid to log on, and check out a whole new world. More good news for parents: The site is very secure, and all chat runs through a filter.
