24 Hour Fitness

By Shelley Walcott

The biggest excuse keeping you out of the gym just went away. Got no time? We've found a solution: 24 hour fitness centers. While you're sleeping, Thomas Baker is working out. He usually visits between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. That's right after he gets out of work. "If I didn't have this place, I'd probably be on my couch eating potato chips," he admitted. Instead, the chemist works on his body. "Anytime Fitness" is one of the newest 24 hour gyms in Milwaukee. It's open all the time. Owner John Mathie says these types of centers are a growing trend. "People love the flex-time here. Working out a little earlier in the morning, a little later in the evening." The idea is to get in...and get out! "We don't even have a front desk. You walk in, you're on a treadmill in 2 minutes," John showed us. Gym owners keep it simple...with basic cardio and weight machines. That makes it cost-effective, John explained. "People I think for years have been paying for the basketball courts, saunas, and not really using them." There are a few extra perks...like a tanning bed, and LCD screens on every treadmill. That's a plus for Kate Allen, who works in sales and often pulls a 12-hour day. "I really like the idea of being able to get here whenever I want to, and not having to get here before 9 o'clock when the gym would close." Anthony Zaffino is Kate's physical trainer. He admits working out during "odd-hours" isn't for everybody. "It's not the healthiest thing to do, but if you're a third shift type person your body is used to that, it's totally fine because that's the way your body works." Considering the hours, security is a priority at the gym. Members need a keycard to get in. There are also security cameras and panic buttons. Thomas says what works for him... often gets him some strange looks. "Once in awhile you get a couple people walking past here, trying to show off their muscles after coming from the bar. But they're usually not too big." Mathie says there are about 500 "Anytime Fitness" locations across the U.S., and they've been opening at the rate of one per day. There are several other 24 hour gyms in the Milwaukee area. Two of those are "Snap" in Bay View and the Wisconsin Athletic Club in West Allis.
