Speedbusters: County Line Road, Near Oak Creek, Caledonia

OAK CREEK - If you're anywhere near County Line Road on the border of Oak Creek and Caledonia, you may wonder what major event just ended.

"Everybody is in a hurry to get home from work," Sgt. Ron Piojda with the Oak Creek Police Department said.

According to Sgt. Piojda, that major event is quitting time, 5 p.m. every weekday, to be exact.

"It's the largest construction project in the state of Wisconsin right now. There are several thousand people emptying out of the parking lot," Piojda said.

Piojda is talking about construction on the new power plant near County Line Road. The speed limit there is 35 mph. The drivers...not so much.

"We got you on laser doing 57," Piojda told a driver.

It's not just speeding that's a problem, but the amount of vehicles on the road. It's road that can get pretty crowded.

"There are a lot of people who ride their bikes on this road," Piojda said.

Officers have reason to worry. In fact, just recently, a cyclist was killed on the road by a hit and run driver.

"A family was devastated," he said.

Devastated after wife and mother, Pat Blundon was left for dead early this month by what police believe was a speeding driver. Her husband of nearly 40-years can't comprehend how someone could do that. He spoke to the news media shortly after it happened.

"How could you leave this woman on the side of the road, by herself," Steven Blundon said.

That should be a reminder to everyone, police say…because at the end of the day, you may save a few minutes by driving faster, but is it worth it?

"This is the family that you shattered," Blundon said.

If you have any information about the hit and run accident, you're asked to call the Caledonia Police Department.
