Driving less could reap you some financial rewards that go beyond simply saving at the pump.

In fact, we discovered your insurance could go down too.

Angela Cowan got so fed up with fuel costs, she and her husband decided to make big changes.

"He located a job closer to my job so that we could still work in the same vicinity of each other and then just carpool together," Cowan explained.

The result: she's driving half as much as she used to. "It's like 28 miles one way to get to work now, versus him driving the extra 30 miles," she told us.

Fewer miles could add up to huge savings on something beyond fuel. Travis Plunkett, who is with the Consumer Federation of America, said her insurance costs will likely go down as well. Why?

"How much you drive is a crucial factor in how much you get charged for auto insurance," Plunkett explained. "If people drive fewer miles, they get into fewer accidents. It's that simple."

And the change could steer you toward serious savings. Plunkett estimates you could save between 10% and 15% on car insurance every year.

The key is to drop into a lower mileage bracket than you were before. So, if you start taking public transportation to work …and simply pleasure drive on weekends, you win.

"Most companies look at whether you drive fewer than 10 thousand miles a year or more than 10 thousand miles per year, so if you're cutting back and it takes you down below that 10 thousand mile limit, you likely could save some money," Plunkett broke down the numbers.

But the drop doesn't happen automatically. Your insurance company won't know you're driving less if you don't say something. Show them your mileage.

Angela already has her savings spent. "We can do extra things with our family as far as going out to eat, taking vacations to visit family and things like that," she mused.

Several insurance companies are starting to offer even deeper discounts to drivers who have monitoring devices installed in their automobiles, so the insurer knows where, when and how far the car is being driven.
