Speedbusters: Woodburn, Willowood In Waukesha

Jay Olstad

WAUKESHA – On a recent Friday afternoon, at the corner of Woodburn and Willowood roads, sat Waukesha Police Officer and Accident Specialist Steve Kraus.

He was there because statistics show many speed related accidents happen on Friday afternoons.

"It just causes problems for everybody," Kraus said.

The speed limit on Woodburn is 25 mph…but not everyone drives that, including one driver whom Officer Kraus pulled over for speeding.

“We've just had some complaints of speeding in the neighborhood," Kraus told the man.

Those complaints are from neighbors like Kim Owens.

"I'm hoping people slow down," Owens said.

She claims speeding drivers have destroyed mailbox, after mailbox, after mailbox…and they have the pictures to prove it.

Some believe it might be vandalism, but Owens saw the skid marks and is sure the culprit is speeding cars.

"We've had four of them in the past two months, actually since Memorial Day weekend that have gone down," said Owens. "It started out about saving our mailboxes."

Then, it turned into something else, she said.

"It's a matter of time before someone gets hit or injured," she said.

So, she called Speedbusters, and we called police.

“We get complaints of speeding in this neighborhood, so we'll be sitting out here a little bit more," Officer Kraus told the driver he pulled over.

That has Owens hopeful because she realizes, right now its mailboxes, but next time, it could be something that can't be replaced.

"In the future just slow down, alright," Kraus said.
