MILWAUKEE - For this installment of our Clean Dining Blue Ribbon awards, we head to an east side hot spot that can let you go vegan, and a north side spot that goes greasy but clean, with not-so-vegan cuisine.
Beans and Barley on North Avenue has become a popular spot on the east side of Milwaukee.
Customers often sit down to eat or take something from the deli home.
Beans and Barley's specialty comes from their vegetarian and vegan cuisine, which means there's a big emphasis on hand-washing.
"We do a lot of gluten-free, a lot of specialty vegan and vegetarian, so we try and make sure there's no cross contamination," said manager Ann Vallencourt.
She says keeping things clean is an all-day, every day process.
"It's daily diligence. You have to keep on it and keep working."
For its clean health inspection, Beans and Barley received one of our two Blue Ribbon awards this week.
"We're very excited about this."
Our other award went to Fryerz, on the corner of North 27th Street and West Fond du Lac Avenue.
They serve up everything from sizzling Philly cheese steaks to chicken and fish dinners.
They deep-fry much of the food, which means cleaning up a lot of grease.
Owner Sam Alramahi says he drives his employees crazy with his cleaning mantra.
"You've got to lead by example, so I clean, and everybody cleans behind me," explained Alramahi.
