Test Your Dog's I.Q.

Test Your Dog's I.Q.

Courtny Gerrish

MILWAUKEE - So your dog can sit and roll over. Does that mean your pooch is a prodigy?

There's a test to find out. To spice things up a little we turned the "Dog I.Q. Test" into a little competition. It's me versus my 4 o'clock co-anchor, George Mallet. So who owns the smartest K9?

Schotzie is my 12 pound terrier mix. Kubla is George's Siberian Husky. My co-anchor has the bigger dog, but is she smarter?

We put both dogs through a series of I.Q. tests to prove "Who's the best dog."

Test One: Put a treat under an empty can, and see how long it takes your dog to find the food.

Schotzie clocked 32 seconds. I'm a little worried about my dog! A few more tries and she hits genius level at five seconds. Kubla takes a turn. She's clocks 21 seconds on the first try and then does it again in just six seconds.

Test Two: Throw a big towel over your dog. Schotzie busted free in 11 seconds. George tells Kubla, "you gotta get out in a hurry so we can pass the test." After two tries we had to give Kubla a pass. George couldn't seem to get the towel over his dog!

Test Three: The smile test. How will your dog react? Schotzie shows no reaction at first. The best reaction would be to wag her tail. It takes a little prodding but finally the tail goes. Full disclosure here, I'm not supposed to encourage her.

Kubla has a definite reaction. She deliberately looks away!

Test Four: Grab a hand towel and a treat, cover the food and time your dog. George had to give Kubla some pointers, "it's under the towel, it's under the towel...so my dog's of subnormal intelligence what am I going to do?"

Test Five: Put a treat where your dog can't reach it, like under the couch. Kubla aced this test. 35 seconds makes her a genius. Things didn't go so well for the little dog. She finally got the treat but never used her paw, a requirement for a high score.

So, who's the best dog? In our unscientific test Schotzie wins by a nose.

The tests are based on a point system and both dogs actually scored in the above average range!
