Save Money On Groceries

Save Money On Groceries

Carole Meekins

Add up your grocery receipts-- and you'll probably be shocked! The average American family spends $700 a month at the grocery store, prices keep going up.

Four on Your Side has tips to help you save on food.

That's good news for people like Deborah Jeter, who admits she's having a tough time making ends meet.

"Eggs are really off the chart," she noted on a recent trip to the store.

But we don't have a choice. You have to feed your family. And it's getting more expensive to do that.

We made a shopping list of 25 common items like milk, macaroni and cheese, cereal and chicken. We took our list to local grocery stores and compared the prices.

Out of the places we visited, Woodman's in Oak Creek was the clear price leader, with a total just over $53.

At the Walmart Supercenter in Germantown, the bill totaled $58 and change.

The average for the Pick N Saves we visited was $60 when you factor in special offers for cardholders; it was closer to $70 without the sale prices factored in.

Another factor you need to consider: the gas. If you're driving far to shop, you're losing money on the gas needed to get you there and back.

Experts suggest you clip coupons and study the store flyer before you go. Making a list based on discounts and combining store discounts with coupons can save you lots.

Roundy's CEO Bob Mariano says his company, which owns Pick N Save stores, is also working diligently both internally and externally to cut costs.

The company announced a new initiative-- bring in your IRS incentive check and you'll get a bump. For every $300 you bring in, Pick N Save will turn it into a gift card worth $330 at the grocery store. Plus, you get free gifts like milk and eggs.

"We're trying to help people stretch their budgets and make ends meet," Mariano told us.

Bottom line: clip coupons, plan your trip and stick to your list.
