'World's Greatest Junk Parade' attracts thousands in Village of Sullivan

VILLAGE OF SULLIVAN - The 'World's Greatest Junk Parade' kicked off this afternoon in the Village of Sullivan in Jefferson County. About 10,000 people came out to watch the parade, which first started back in the 1970's.
The 3-mile route runs all the way to the Town of Rome. People bring their old beat-up trucks and tractors, and decorate them in creative and unusual ways--hoping they make it the entire route. Chris Kadow owns a 1937 antique tractor. He admits, "It kinda looks like junk, but it still runs."
Steve Pease is the parade coordinator. He says, "If you can imagine it, then you can build it, and drag it here and show it off!"
Travis Geier owns a company called The Junk Truck, and had a float last year. He says this year, "We tried to come up with a theme this year, but.. we collect junk, it's the junk truck, we haul people's junk out of their homes, so we just, for the last 2 weeks we just gathered stuff we thought was interesting out of all the jobs."
One woman watching the parade exclaims, "It's pretty crazy. This is my first time here, and it's quite a parade!"
Pease says it's not unusual for some of the vehicles to break down on the route. "Yes, we do have some people with tractors and wreckers, to pull stuff off to the side because we typically do have either something start on fire and burn up, or break down."
Money raised goes to area fire departments and EMS. There are even trophies given to the best displays, and they are made out of junk!
