Honor for Jeanetta Robinson is Positively Milwaukee

  • Print

MILWAUKEE - For decades Jeannetta Robinson was the symbol of caring and compassion in Milwaukee. She was the quintessential champion of the poor. The founder of CYD worked right up until she died October 9th, 2008.

The state legislature recently passed House Bill 629. A passionate delegation traveled to Madison urging support. The bill renames a stretch of I-43 in Robinson's honor.

Robinson's son Charles "Butch" Walton says if his mother was alive today she would say, "Thank you Lord, it is a wonderful day, this is a day in history."

Walton recalls his mother's motto, "Love in Action." He says his mom's big heart is still with him today. He recalls, "Everything was done with love, through love and action. She always stated that there's no such thing as a bad child, only a child that needs more love."

The section of Interstate 43 between North Avenue and the Keefe Avenue exits will renamed the Jeannetta Simpson Robinson Memorial Highway.

Walton tells TMJ4, "I am truly excited. At one point when they said it had been passed, I felt overwhelmed!"

The total cost for the Jeannetta Robinson Memorial sign will be $9,000. CYD has already raised $7,500.

To many, the Jeannetta Simpson Robinson Memorial Highway will serve as a fitting reminder that Robinson is like a guardian angel watching over the city, Milwaukee's own, highway to heaven.
