Locks of Love is Positively Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE - Dozens of young ladies filed up on the stage at Divine Savior Holy Angels High School January 25th, for what could be called a "Mane Event." The lively teens enjoyed their long hair one last time. The fresh faced bunch was filled with anticipation. All were getting ready for their future bobs and shorter do's. The students were about to donate their hair to "Locks of Love." The organization gives hair to disadvantaged children living with a medical condition that causes hair loss.   Senior Theresa Hofshulte gave up hair for the second time. Hofshulte goes on to say, "I did it my freshman year. I donated six inches. This year I'm donating ten so it's going to be a little different. I'm excited to cut my hair. I'm not nervous. I'm very excited."

She notes, "It's a really good feeling to give something that I have a surplus of."

Cathy Trochelman, DSHACampus Minister says, "I think this is one of the perfect fundraiser for our students. Smiling, Trochelman adds, "Being an all girls school we have a plethora of hair.

In the past ten years the girls at DSHA have donated 350 thousand dollars worth of hair. This year alone they gave 38 thousand. A huge crowd gathers to watch the young ladies say goodbye to their ponytails. There are screams, shouts, cheers, and applause. But they all say the "shear madness" is worth it because it's a selfless act to help others.

Trochelman sums it up this way. "I think its one of the tangible ways that students can give back. It's something so simple, but they know they are really making a difference for the people who need it."
