Positively MilwaukeeFood Contribution is Positively MilwaukeeBy Carole MeekinsMILWAUKEE - Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin got a huge lift recently. 90 thousand pounds of food donated by the Balistreri owned Sendiks stores. The donation was large enough to fill three semi's. Co owner Nick Balistreri notes, "No matter what time of the year, there's always a group of people down on their luck and need a hand to help them get back on their feet. Customers can also help by filling a feed the hungry barrel in the front of the stores. Balistreri says they can also ask the cashier to keep the change. Balistreri points out, " If a customer comes in they can say keep the change for Feeding America, that money will go to help purchase necessary food to feed the hungry here in our area." Unfortunately, the need this year is greater than ever, with unemployment hovering around ten percent in Wisconsin. At Feeding America, which is formerly Second Harvest, the demand is up thirty percent. Bonnie Bellehumeur, President of Feeding America points out, "It is a time for awareness. a time to help others know they can make a big difference. Of course the need is all year long." And this year the Balistreri owned Sendik's won the agency's Hunger Hope Award for the second time. But the real winners are the families in Wisconsin who will not have to go without. |
