Holiday Toy Give A Way
MILWAUKEE - This Christmas week marks an annual event that has brightened the lives of thousands of children. It is an event paying tribute to two compassionate souls.
This annual tradition has put smiles on thousands of kid's faces.
Organized by Career Youth Development, it's billed as, "The toys for children that Santa forgot but God remembered."
Charles Walton said, "A toy is another form of love. Of course, we have that emotional love and caring that we do give a child, but at Christmas time giving that toy is more than just a toy and something to play with. It is also a reinforcement of love saying, 'I care.'"
And that's why in Charles "Butch" Walton's office at CYD is filled with bags of donated toys.
From the Easy-Bake Oven to teddy bears. They'll be doled out at this year's annual Christmas bash.
Waltons' mom, the legendary Jeanetta Robinson, founded the event in memory of Butch's murdered niece.
"Little Netta was murdered on April 4th 1984," Walton explained. "She had not made it to her 10th birthday. But what Jeannette decided to do was to begin, in her memory, to continue to giving toys in little Netta's memory."
But now the toy giveaway is also in memory of Jeanetta Robinson, who died last year.
"She is still very much with me," Walton said. "I have what's called 'Mother With.' Because we're constantly sharing in all of the many things that she taught me, and how she brought me up: first to love God and to care about people and she taught me how to share."
Butch hopes to give presents to about 1,500 kids...and every child will leave with at least two toys.
And thanks to the big hearts of two angels, thousands of Milwaukee kids will again see the true face of holiday spirit...love.
"I've just been building on it and I'm proud to be able to carry on that legacy," Walton said.
The toy giveaway is Monday, December 28 at North Division High School at 10th and Center. It starts at 3 p.m.
