Positively Milwaukee: Defibrillators for MPD

  • Print

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee police officers will soon have another tool to use on their beats: defibrillators.

Chief Ed Flynn held a news conference Tuesday to announce the generous donation of five AED's for use in squad cars.  It's the first step in a plan to outfit each of 250 squad cars with a defibrillator.

"Our mission is to prevent the loss of life. we are often the first responders in medical emergencies and our ability to take life saving action is imperative," Flynn said.  He also recognized the heroic actions of three officers who, while responding to a disturbance call, noticed a woman collapsed on a nearby porch.  They gave her CPR and ultimate saved her life.

Officer Michael Driscoll was one of those officers.

"We began doing CPR, we did have the aid of a mask, she was not breathing and we could feel her pulse going down and weak very rapidly," he remembered.

Officer Driscoll and his partner were able to save her life, but wished they had had an AED to help.

Now, officers have five.  Hupy and Abraham, a local law firm, donated three AED's Tuesday.  Michael Hupy's family donated another two.

They would like others to step up and donate as well.  "We urge businesses and individuals who are able to contribute to this program because we know sooner or later what you do is going to save a life,"  Michael Hupy said.
