A Father's Remembrance

By Carole Meekins

In an act of love and courage, Dave Wyatt put together a video tribute not long after his son's death. Wyatt tells TODAY'S TMJ4, "Maybe it's just an old man trying to keep his son alive maybe. There's so much energy created by the happening..the grief. I just had to do something I guess."

Wyatt's son, Marine Lance Corporal Daniel R. Wyatt was killed October 12 2004 in Iraq. He was 22 years old.

For Dave, commemorating his son's life on video was therapeutic. He admits, "Concentration is a hard thing right after a death, especially of a child."

Outside Dave's Caledonia home, patriotism flies. A giant flag post and memorial bears his son's name. Along the porch banners of the military, and the red white and blue.

We head downstairs, and Dave shares a distinguished room. A tribute to his fallen son. A vision of war and peace.

Dave Wyatt lovingly remembers his youngest son. "He played baseball, played football, high school football. He was my baby boy."

Dave is lifted by comfort quilts. They are made by strangers for grieving military families. He is touched. He points out, "These are not people that I knew. These are people that heard about Daniel's death. I don't know. It just makes me very very proud to be an American."

Also, in his patriotic parlor, pictures with former President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. Wyatt supports our mission overseas. He notes, "You're either going to fight it there or you're going to fight it here."

Wyatt has devoted a special room to his fallen son. It's replete with medals, proclamations, even an Iraqi ballot. Also adorning the walls, portraits of Daniel. Paintings that were done free by artists as a gift to the family.

One visit to this special room it's clear. Daniel Wyatt was cloaked in courage.

Wyatt proudly recalls his young son grew into a tough young man. He reveals, "Daniel went through boot camp with pneumonia. Talk about tough. Talk about wanting to be a Marine. So you ask me what makes me proud? You just got one. "

While sharing Daniel's room, Wyatt shares other memories like Daniel's military transformation when he first went away. "I pick him up at the airport. Oh Carole, I got to tell you, this skinny little kid that left, this is a different person. He's buff now. He's a Marine. Absolutely he's a Marine."

So what would Daniel say if he saw this special room? Wyatt is honest. "He'd say what the hell is all this fuss about?"

Well, it's a fuss he deserves and one we all need to make. Men and women like Daniel are the hallmark of bravery and freedom. Daniel Wyatt climbed the ladder of courage to the Stars and Stripes of heaven. His life is a reminder to all of us. Keep the brave of war close to our hearts.
