Positively Milwaukee: Tae Kwon Do
For the Butler Family, Tae Kwon Do is a family affair. Three sisters are kicking their way into the hearts of judges all over the country. The of Estella, Jada and Kayla Butler can boast more than 170 awards. They have earned dozens of medals, trophies, and ribbons. Competition has proven to be a great teacher. Ten year old Jada Butler reveals, "You have to work hard for what you get and you cant get what you want all the time." 12 year old Estella is the National Amateur Athletic Union Black Belt champion in her weight category. She's also on the National AAU Cadet team. She tells TMJ4. ""I feel proud, happy. I thank my instructors for all their hard work and support." 50 Year old Lewis Butler is a single father working two jobs to support his girls. Lewis started to box when he was only eight years old. He wanted his young girls to learn an activity that would give them discipline and self esteem." He says his girls have found that in the popular martial art. He notes, "Tae Kwon builds character and that's really what its all about." Half of Lewis's income goes toward Tae Kwon Do lessons, gear and traveling. Butler's advice to other single parents? "It doesn't matter what you do, walk in the park, spend some time with your kids. Even if you just talk long distance. Write a letter. Keep communication open. As they grow up it will be very important." The family lives in the Westlawn Housing project. They get by with little money.; But the young souls have great gratitude. 8 year old Kayla Butler points out, "I'm very lucky that I do have a father that can support me." One visit to their home, you see caring and commitment. And with this talented sister act, you witness more than powerful moves. You see a family rich in the ways that matter the most.
