Express Yourself Milwaukee

By Carole Meekins

Express Yourself Milwaukee is a place where young people can literally find the rhythm of life.

At risk young people are exposed to a world of music dance and visual arts. The goal of the six-week camp is to release untapped potential.

Holly Haebig is a manager of "Express Yourself Milwaukee." She notes, "We want to be a place where people can find the artistic edge and know they can channel it to something positive."

"Express Yourself Milwaukee" is a non-profit organization that serves about 700 students a year. Guest artists help young people find their inner talents and strength.

Many participants are exposed to a world they might never have seen.

Organizers say creativity helps the kids face adversity. Many of those enrolled have lost a friend to violence. But taking part in the music, drama, dance, and visual arts gives them a release from the pain.

Haebig comments, "Unfortunately too many people know children who have been killed."

Student Alexanderia Johnson tells Carole Meekins that kids taking part in the camp will "enjoy everything that they do." Haebig likes hearing that. She remarks, "Hopefully they take it back to their own life and continue bringing art into their life because, that's what we as a staff love to do."
