Hip Hop Group Using Music To Inspire Youth

By Katie DeLong

MILWAUKEE – When you think of hip hop, you may not think of a religious message, but one local group is using its youthful sounds to inspire our youth. It’s called FLOW, and the group is Positively Milwaukee. It’s a group that’s using a modern sound to send young people a positive message. It’s called FLOW, the acronym for Fellowship Leaning on the Word. Their lyrics are uplifting. TODAY’S TMJ4’s Carole Meekins: “Why is it important that you get a positive message out about your music and not just a bunch of negative images that we sometimes see?” “You see people talking about gun and drugs and girls, and whatever, and you don’t see people promoting God. A lot of people are Christians, but they don’t promote God. That’s what FLOW is: Fellowship Leaning on the Word of God,” UWM student Lance Cain said. The musicians perform all over the Milwaukee area, reaching teens with fun, faith and rhythm. Pastor Rob Torres came up with the idea as a way to reach hard to reach kids. He relates because he’s been there. “I was looking at a situation where I was going to serve considerable time in jail. I was looking at 80 years due to some affiliation I had with some gang banging,” Pastor Rob said. Pastor Rob says starting FLOW was like a calling from God. He said goodbye to a life of gangs and hello to a life of faith. “I certainly can relate life experiences on their level and their language, which is something that sometimes churches and other community organizations and outreach groups have a hard time doing,” Pastor Rob said. That’s why the hip hop youth ministry uses non-traditional methods hosting dozens of concerts that reach youth from a variety of churches. “They get a group of caring people who care about them having hope and faith, something to believe in other than the streets,” FLOW liaison Rashi Common said. When the talented musicians are in action, everyone from the sound man to the audience get moving. For many youth, FLOW inspires harmony, giving them a beat to follow, on stage and in life. Pastor Rob's wife, Jennifer and their foster child are also involved in the program.
