Positively MilwaukeeMan's Music Honors Armed ForcesBy Katie DeLong
MILWAUKEE – His name is Clarke D. Groholski, but they call him Butchie G. or Butch.
Whatever you call him, he is a talented patriot with a poignant message for our troops, and Butch has written a song that’s Positively Milwaukee.
“That’s the time…time when I’m alone…and I wonder where I’m going…I feel pain that’s deep inside…”
Music and lyrics about war: “So Far From Home” was written by Butch Groholski. It’s a tribute to men and women serving overseas.
It’s based on his personal experience. When Butch left for Vietnam, it was the first time in his life he had left the Milwaukee area.
“My mother and father…I had a beautiful family, and when I left them, it was heartbreaking,” Groholski said.
Butch really knows what he’s talking about. He was a gunner in the 360th transportation company and served in Vietnam from 1966-1967.
It’s a song that will strike a chord with anyone…especially those who’ve served.
“I was lonesome for my family, my loved ones, and I just wanted to get back safe, and I can imagine these people are in the same position I was,” Groholski said.
Butch’s friend Gayle Schilz volunteers to help veterans like Butch. She calls them all heroes.
“It’s really fun to be able to do it. I wish more people would take the time, and just like Butch said, pray for them. That’s just what they need, prayers,” Schilz said.
TODAY’S TMJ4’s Carole Meekins: “Butch, why is it important that we remember all of our men and women every day who are fighting overseas?”
“No one should ever forget that these people are putting their life on the line for us,” Groholski said.
As you listen to Butch sing, you are witnessing the ultimate patriot: a soldier still giving back, long after his days at war are gone.
Fourteen members of Groholski’s family have served in the military.
