Positively MilwaukeeSchool Takes Learning Beyond The BooksBy Katie DeLong
MILWAUKEE - It's an expression of art that helps students learn.
One school has a lesson plan that goes beyond the books, and it’s positively Milwaukee.
At St. Adelbert School on the near south side, a students’ educational project brings our world a little closer together.
“We created an outdoor classroom for everyone in the community to really use,” St. Adelbert teacher Kara Morris said.
The giant mural outside the school was created by students with the help of local artists. The colorful canvas celebrates the many cultures in our world.
“It took us about two months from start to finish and that was doing research and investigating, and working with the students on the process of the mural and everything they needed to do,” Morris said.
Morris says making the giant mural helped kids get involved in the learning process.
“We have worked into the curriculum social studies, math, the art process and really everything so that we could create an experience that would expand their knowledge and give them something to teach about and be excited about as well as beautify our community,” Morris said.
Perhaps by studying other worlds, the young people will have better knowledge about the universe we share and it will color their own world with understanding.
The fifth graders created the mural with the help from local artists.
