Buzz Cuts For Cancer

By Katie DeLong

SHOREWOOD - It's a haircut that shows compassion for cancer, and some Shorewood High School teens are proof that a shaved head can be cool. The scene was set at Shorewood High School as some brave students said goodbye to their tresses to help fight childhood cancer. “It’s for a good cause and everything and hair’s going to grow back so I really don’t care about it,” student Kathy Hackett said. It’s called “Buzz Cuts For Cancer,” and all monies raised go to the MACC Fund. The scene is even more impressive when you think of how teenagers can obsess over their hair, but the brave young ladies have plenty of support, as they embarked toward a hair-free life. They have mementos to capture the moment. As the heads were shaves, there were stares of amazement and signs of support. “It feels a lot different. I can feel wind on my head. It’s totally different. It’s a totally new experience,” student Karini Curri said. These teens may be young, but they’re wise beyond their years. They’ve already learned the art of selfless giving. “I did it because I wanted to donate my hair to somebody who needs it and my hair will grow back, so I don’t need it,” one student said. And the pictures say it all…bald really is beautiful. “I like helping people, so that’s why I did it,” one student said.
