Pastor Preaches Goodness

MILWAUKEE - In an area riddled with crime, one local pastor preaches goodness. Her faith and dedication is not only changing lives, her mission is positively Milwaukee. Near 35th and Burleigh is a neighborhood where crime and drugs have a powerful grip, but that’s not stopping the leader of one small church from sending sounds of hope. Pastor Jeanetta Perry has seen her membership at Calvary Hill Temple Apostolic Church dwindle. Some fear the area, but Perry refuses to run. TODAY’S TMJ4’s Carole Meekins: “Pastor, when you look around the neighborhood, do you really believe that this church can help save souls?” “Yes. If we don’t teach them here positive things, then they’re going to learn something negative out there,” Perry said. That's why Pastor Perry will spend the summer reaching out to the young. What disheartens her most? “That they’re dying in the streets. They’re dying in the streets. Our children are literally dying,” Perry said. She wants to attract people of all ages. “I feel like if I could just lead one soul to Christ, I feel like I’ve done what God called me to do,” Perry said. One soul Perry has lifted: Connie Taylor. Six months ago Taylor said goodbye to a lifetime of addictions. “I’m an ex crackhead and alcoholic. I’ve been clean for seven months now, baptized and filled with the holy ghost of Jesus,” Taylor said. Taylor says that a boarded up drug house use to be her home, but these days, Calvary Hill Temple is her new place to stay. “My rehab was right here in church,” Taylor said. TODAY’S TMJ4’s Carole Meekins said when she greeted the congregation during a prayer service, she felt their warmth and compassion and she instantly knew this is a place where hearts can heal. “So I can say ‘thanks God’ that I’ve got my life together and there’s no hard coming into the Lord’s house when you really want help,” Taylor said. Pastor Perry plans to open up a love and charity shelter in the next month so that people in need will have place to stay. She also plans to start feeding the needy on Sundays as well. Services are at 10:00 a.m. and the church is located at 3419 West Burleigh.
