Woman Gives Gift Of Life To Sister

By Katie DeLong

MILWAUKEE - It's one of the most unselfish acts possible…and Terry Burazin's gift to her sister Judy Faver is positively Milwaukee. Two sisters have a new bond that will last a lifetime. Both Terry and Judy are doing great after major surgery. Terry donated a kidney to her sister Judy earlier this year. They both choke back tears talking about it. “What I told her when she left the hospital, I thanked her for the gift of life. It was very emotional at the hospital, yes,” the sisters said. Judy has lived with one kidney since she was 16. When it was clear she needed a transplant, Terry, an environmental services assistant at St. Luke’s Hospital did not hesitate. “I don’t feel any different. Everybody says ‘oh, do you feel empty?’ I says ‘no, I have a big heart,’” Terry said. Now, the two urge others to consider organ donation. “Why take your organs to heaven when earth knows you need them here,” Terry said. “One thing we learned from the transplant team was that if she should ever need a kidney in her lifetime, she will go to the top of the transplant list,” Judy said. When Terry returned to work at Aurora St. Luke’s, her supervisor gave her a shawl. They’re made by volunteers to help patients regain their strength. Volunteers actually pray as they knit them. Terry also got an award from the CEO of St. Luke’s. These are just a few examples of the widespread support for the sisters. “Even when people knew I was going to get the transplant, people were sending out emails to all of our friends to pray for us. It was just beautiful. Totally unexpected,” Judy said. Judy has faced a number of challenges. At the age of 20, she survived a cerebral hemorrhage. She’s also a breast cancer survivor. Such setbacks have kept her strong, and thanks to a loving sister, with a warm smile and giant heart, Judy has a great chance for a healthy life. “I love life and I’m going to keep going,” Judy said. Judy cannot wait until she is able to go golfing again. Both sisters encourage us to use our driver’s licenses to say yes to organ donation.
