MILWAUKEE - The Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure is less than two weeks away, and some participants are proving there's strength in numbers. That story is Positively Milwaukee.

Cancer touches all of us, but three local ladies are doing something about it: walking in Milwaukee’s Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure!

They're all a part of the Wheaton Franciscan Corporate Team at Elmbrook Memorial Hospital.

"I walk this for my friend, who died of breast cancer in the spring, and my aunt who has fourth stage bone and breast and lung cancer,” Marilyn Cech, Elmbrook Memorial Hospital Director of Surgical Services said.

“I'm happy to say all my colleagues I’ve seen treated for breast cancer have survived and gone on,” Regina Mosby, Elmbrook Memorial Hospital Director of Women’s Services.

"Everyday a new friend or someone I know is diagnosed with cancer, or is going to be dying of cancer,” Clara Nettesheim, breast cancer survivor said.

“You're all sisters and all working for a joint cause, and it's a powerful thing,” Cech said.

This is the hospital's fifth year sponsoring a corporate team. Last year it had 182 men and women. This year: nearly double that!

Nettesheim is a six year breast cancer survivor, and loyal Komen walker. She says her cancer helped her put things in perspective.

“I think it's made me a stronger person, and I think, I hope I’ve helped my community by supporting Susan G. Komen and other causes,” Nettesheim said.

Nettesheim has special message for her teammates:

“I have a bracelet that says ‘together we can, and we can...together,’” Nettesheim said.

All three women work for the hospital, and are impacted by cancer almost everyday in their professions. The Pavlic Center at the hospital's Elmbrook location offers services for cancer patients.

“I think it's important we treat people as people, and not as patients,” Mosby said.

The team hopes to raise more than $5,000 this year to help put us one step closer to a cure.

“It’s just a good feeling, I know I’m helping people, and someday we will eradicate breast cancer, and that's our goal,” Nettesheim said.

Seventy-five percent of the money raised during the Komen walk stays in Milwaukee.
