MILWAUKEE – One local mother can boast quite a life change, after going from facing prison, to church…and finding a better path. Her story is Positively Milwaukee.

When Janet Mayfield entered the doors of Greater Mount Sinai Church of God and Christ, her life was changed forever.

TODAY’S TMJ4’s Carole Meekins: "When I look at you, I would never think that you were on drugs.”

“Oh yeah, I was on drugs. It took me awhile to come, took a lot of praying coming to church. I was ashamed,” Mayfield said.

One day, this mother of two found herself addicted to drugs and in a bad relationship.

Carole Meekins: “So you were taken away from your kids?”

“I was kidnapped, taken away from my kids. I was beat, stripped of everything,” Mayfield sad.

She was even facing the possibility of 12 years in prison, but ended up not serving.

“I was trapped in my addiction, but thank God, I turned my life around,” Mayfield said.

That she did. Today, Mayfield finds comfort in her church: Greater Mount Sinai. The church recently underwent major renovations, and as the church has rebuilt, Mayfield has also rebuilt her life. She now looks forward to going back to work and has been drug free for six months.

Mayfield’s addictions have been replaced with healthy activities. She’s a regular at the church, helping out and volunteering, and she also attends women’s group meetings. Church leaders taught her a better way to live.

“I hope somebody sees me on TV that knows me and sees the struggles I went through, being beaten, abused, so thanks to God this church has really helped my life,” Mayfield said.

Now, Mayfield has devoted her life to her kids, 6-year-old Tiffany and 11-year-old Elcid. She also has a greater spiritual awareness, and has a more positive way of thinking.

“It was a healing process. It’s a growing process, and I’m so grateful I was able to turn my life around,” Mayfield said.

Mayfield wants others living a life of darkness to know, with determination, drive and faith, they can find the light.

“Yeah I was on drugs, but look at me now. I thank God. This is what God do for you,” Mayfield said.

Mayfield also volunteers to clean the church a couple days a week, and also finds joy in singing in the choir.
