MILWAUKEE - Monday was a day to honor Martin Luther King's memory, and soon, a national memorial will keep his vision alive.

TODAY’S TMJ4’s Carole Meekins recently spoke to the president of the National MLK Foundation. Its Web site shows a powerful monument in honor of peace.

A dream is about to become a reality.

The dream is a monument to Dr. Martin Luther King in Washington D.C. It will grace the national mall.

Attorney Harry Johnson spearheads the fundraising campaign.

“We’re talking about a thirty foot tall memorial...three pieces of granite,” Johnson said.

So far, the MLK Memorial Fund has raised $87 million. It's now close to its $100 million goal.

"I am honored to be a part of it, but many more before me and even those who come after me have had a role in this,” Johnson said.

Organizers believe the innovative design will capture King’s message: freedom, peace and human dignity.

“You go from the mountain of the despair...read his words…and there he is on a stone of hope," Johnson said.

TODAY’S TMJ4’s Carole Meekins: “When you think of the fact that this monument will mean a lot to the future generations, how does that make you feel when you think of kids going to see the legacy of Dr. King?”

“What this memorial would mean that soon the memorial would be diversified like this country. Soon there would be a man of peace, a man of color and alongside the presidents on the mall,” Johnson said.

Soon, the world will have a place to reflect on peace, and non-violence, words that are as relevant today as they were in the 60s.

“I think this is important of all of us, whether we’re young, old or those unborn to understand the history and significance of Dr. King. That we as a people will get to the promise land,” Johnson said.

Construction is set to start sometime this year.
