Hometown Heroes: Sgt. Joshua Marks
Candyce Hanus knows what it's like to have a son at war. It's clear, looking at her face it's hard. "You just take it a day at a time and you do a lot of praying."
Hanus is the Executive Director of the USO of Wisconsin. Her son returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan on Memorial Day. He had been serving as a Military Police officer.
Still, Hanus grieves for all fallen soldiers. She notes, "There's a sense of relief when you know it's not your family member, but you grieve just the same because it could be."
Working at the USO gives Hanus joy. Especially knowing she's supporting our troops by supporting their families. Hanus concedes, "I felt if I couldn't be there for my son when he was going through tough times I felt I could give a little bit back by supporting some other mother's child."
Her son, Staff Sgt. Joshua Marks served in Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf. Sgt. Marks is an avid Packers fan who loves Wisconsin's four seasons, Milwaukee festivals, and the lakefront.
We salute Sgt. Marks. It is because of his courage and other hometown heroes, that we enjoy liberty.
Hanus agrees."We live in an amazing country with so much freedom. But freedom came with a cost and it's easy to forget what that cost is."
