4 on your side4 On Your Side: Affordable Wind PowerBy George Mallet, Stephanie GrahamSTURTEVANT - A new device is making wind power more affordable. It's called a Wind Spire. Unlike a windmill, the turbines are only 30 feet tall and they make virtually no sound. But they still pack an energy-filled punch. Electrical Systems and Services, Inc. in Sturtevant is Wisconsin's exclusive dealer for the turbine, which is made at a plant in Michigan. Owner P. Jay Datt is proud of that. "That's really an important issue for me, to show my support to this company who's employing laid-off auto workers to make wind turbines," Datt explains. "This is very suitable for homes and small businesses, parking lots and other areas," Datt says. The price tag is $12,000, but after tax credits and rebates, it could plummet to less than $6,000. "This is a one-time installation cost, there's no maintenance, and the lifespan is expected to be 20-plus years," Datt says. But don't cut your electricity yet...this is only a supplemental energy source. Power output is only about 1.2 Kilowatts a year. That's less than 20% of what an average home uses. Datt says that doesn't matter to most people. "Many people are making a green statement," he says. The Wind Spire isn't for everyone. Some environments are better than others, so do your research. Electrical Systems and Services held a Grand Opening Installation Ceremony today. |
