Cheap Thrills

Cheap Thrills

Jay Olstad

Looking to have some fun at an amusement park this summer, but not sure if your wallet can hold up to the ride? Some parks have already dropped prices to compete with the economy. It may not be a 'free ride', but there are some good deals if you look for them!

It's easy to spend a bundle on a day at the park, so how can you save? Stephanie Garcia loves amusement parks, and has some tips.

"We never walk into a theme park and pay the rack rate, we save money by clipping coupons, finding coupons anywhere we can," Stephanie says.

There are more savings secrets you can take for a ride. Emily Kaufman is known as the 'Travel Mom'. She says the Internet is a great place to start.

"Whether you visit the park's Web site directly or the local visitor and convention bureau, you can often time save money by purchasing more than one park at a time, taking advantage of park hopper passes," Kaufman explains.

And you can save on other things, too. Henrich Kaiser is another amusement park-goer who has some advice.

"Sometimes there are add-on options that you can get for cheaper-parking sometimes," Henrich suggests.

In some parks, visiting during the week or later in the day means lower rates. And always remember to check your connections for savings.

"You can take advantage of memberships with different organizations, whether its places like AAA, or even your employer," Kaufmann says.

If you live close enough, a seasonal or annual pass may pay off.

"If you plan to visit a park over and over again you'll use it so many times that it reduces the cost each time you visit," Kaufmann points out.

She says it's also easy to keep costs low once you're in…by using a few simple tricks: "My suggestion is you have a hearty meal before you visit the theme park, and then take advantage of the offerings of kids meals because those tend to be plenty of food and more value oriented."

And don't forget to bring the other necessities with you!

"For example sunscreen, film, videotape…those things are a bit more costly inside the park," Kaufmann warns.

These are all helpful tips for the families looking for fun in these tight times.

"Anyway we can to save a dollar," Stephanie exclaims.

A tip from the travel mom to help with stress: Plan to start your visit for mid-day, when every one else is having lunch. Your group will be refreshed and ready to go while everyone else is taking a break.
