County Supervisor Target of Investigation

By Aaron Diamant

MILWAUKEE - We're learning more about a secret John Doe investigation launched by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office. Sources tell TODAY'S TMJ4 County Supervisor Toni Clark is right in the middle.

We got wind of the investigation after a judge granted state Senator Lena Taylor of Milwaukee immunity from prosecution in open court last Friday.

"I have been called as a witness, a friendly witness, in a John Doe investigating proceeding," Taylor said on Friday. I'm not the target. I've done nothing wrong."

What Taylor told prosecutors in court, why she wanted immunity, and other details about the case remain secret -- for now. However, sources say Clark is the target.

It's not the first time Clark has come under fire. County elections officials warned Clark several times in recent years that she broke campaign finance rules by not reporting a $50 donation from County Board Chairman Lee Holloway in 2007, accepting donations that were too big, and not filing proper paperwork.

Clark wasn't in her office Wednesday. No one answered the door at her home, and she never returned our calls.

But in a statement to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Clark said, "You know like I know, often times John Doe investigations do occur. If I am or am not part of one, those are secret investigations, so I couldn't tell you anything anyway."

And while everyone involved in this John Doe case is bound by a secrecy order, sources inside the Courthouse say it's likely the scope of this investigation goes beyond Supervisor Clark and her past campaign finance problems.
