I-Team: More Parking Problems

By Aaron Diamant

An exclusive I-Team investigation uncovers even more parking problems in Milwaukee for people with disabilities.

In our last story, we showed you issues with the accessible parking at some of our area's biggest attractions. Now, the attention turns downtown.

When Milwaukee County turned this public parking lot on Wells street into an employee lot, it left people like Judith Pipher, who uses a motorized scooter, stuck.

"They didn't take into consideration that people who use wheelchairs use this parking lot, too," Pipher said.

Plus, roadwork blocked the accessible spots across the street for weeks. The next two closest spots are on 8th St. Each one is supposed to have a five foot access aisle, but one does not. Not only that, there's an eight inch curb to contend with. The other spot does have the access aisle, bu it leads right to a giant pothole, a two inch bump, and and a ramp that's too steep.

"You're doing this slope and that slope, so it's a double slope to come through here," Pipher complained.

Pipher says she runs into problems like this all the time downtown. All city engineer, Jeff Polenske, asks is that people like Pipher speak up to let the city know.

"If we find something that's a real problem, we're certainly willing to make a change," Polenske said.
