I-TeamExclusive I-Team Follow Up: Deadbeat DadBy Katie DeLong
WAUKESHA - A deadbeat dad professional poker player is now a convicted felon after failing to pay his child support.
Scott Obst owes more than $150,000 in back child support. In a Waukesha County courtroom, a judge ordered that if he doesn't pay $50,000 by the end of the year he could be sent to prison.
Earlier this year, the TODAY’S TMJ4 I-Team found Obst living the high life in Las Vegas. Obst was a professional poker player and worked in the adult film industry. He made $37,000 in one month, but made no child support payments in 2007 or 2008 until the I-Team confronted him.
When the I-Team did catch up with him, Obst ran off.
Eventually Obst was arrested and brought back to Wisconsin where he sat in jail for more than a month.
Tuesday, he entered no contest pleas for failing to pay child support to his 17-year-old son Andrew.
Obst left court with his new family where TODAY’S TMJ4’s John Mercure tried to speak with him.
Mercure: "Will you talk to us about why it took jail time and convictions for you to begin making your payments?"
Obst had nothing to say. The mother of his son, Connie Bassel did.
"I'm glad it's over. I'm thinking we're going to be back. I'm not very confident he's going to comply with what he needs to do. I'm hoping for Drew’s sake he does," Bassel said.
Obst must pay almost $50,000 by the end of the year to stay out of prison.
Waukesha County Assistant District Attorney Barb Michels prosecuted the case. "It really is the best for everybody. For Andrew, his mother, the state," Michels said.
If Obst's recent track record is any indicator, it seems unlikely he will pay what the courts have ordered in any type of timely fashion.
The judge gave Obst permission to return to Las Vegas, and we're told that could happen as soon as Wednesday.
