I-Team: Deadbeat Dads

By John Mercure

During the past two years, the I-Team busted more than a dozen deadbeat dads and moms. We have recovered tens of thousands of dollars that those deadbeats owe their kids. In most cases, once we have exposed a deadbeat, he or she has begun to pay. Many of them were arrested first and then, reluctantly began to pay. But the very first deadbeat we busted has refused to do the right thing...until now. Remember Daniel Scott? When TODAY'S TMJ4's John Mercure first approached him 18 months ago, Scott grabbed the microphone and said, "I gave you the facts of the story." John told him to let go of the microphone, and asked, "Why are you running from us like you're running from your responsibility to this little girl?" Scott replied, "I told you the facts of the story." Let's recap those facts. Before the I-Team got involved, Daniel Scott owed almost $40,000 in child support. He hadn't made a payment to his 11-year-old daughter in years. John's meeting with Scott got even more heated. Scott grabbed John by the shirt, and John said, "You owe this woman." Scott replied, "Do you think you're concerned about my daughter?" John said he was. Scott said, "No, you're not." John then told Scott, "You're a deadbeat dad." That's when Scott responded, "You're going to be deadbeat on the ground if you don't shut up!" Following our report, Scott was arrested. He has spent thousands of dollars in Waukesha County courtrooms fighting the payments he is supposed to make. Patty Scott is Daniel's ex-wife. She says, "It's not just money. It's the whole situation." John then asked her, "How frustrating has this been...the whole ordeal?" Patty replied, "Very, very, very frustrating. It's unbelievable. Hurry up and wait. Hurry up and wait." Twice this year Scott's scheduled court appearance to plead guilty to felony failure to pay child support had to be canceled when he showed up intoxicated. Earlier this month he finally plead guilty. It aggravates his young daughter Kaitlyn. "It hurts me because I don't feel like I have a dad. I just feel like he's a man." She continues to say, "I just don't really think like he's my dad. I call him 'Dan' not dad." Waukesha County prosecutor Barb Michels says there is good reason to continue to wage lengthy legal battles over deadbeats like Daniel Scott. "The kids go without things they could have had their parent been paying support...clothes, extra curricular activities...things that other kids have that they can't." Recently Scott has made just enough payments to stay out of jail. He still owes $35,000. He's scheduled to be sentenced next month. Scott is likely to be sentenced to at least a year in jail. He will be given work release so that he can make his monthly child support payments. If you have a story you would like John Mercure to investigate, please email him at jmercure@todaystmj4.com.
